Traces of Ana Mendieta

"Where is Ana Mendieta?"... echoes in the New York streets from about 500 feminist protesters during the 1992 inaugural show for the Guggenheim Museum.  This question was directed at the male-dominated art establishment for having already forgotten the prolific and profound artist while choosing rather to include her former partner, the minimalist sculpture Carl Andre, who was tried and acquitted for Ana's death in 1985 when she "fell" from their 34th floor apartment after a heated argument between the couple.  "My art is grounded on the belief in one universal energy which runs through everything," she wrote in an artist's statement from the early 1980's, "from insect to man, from man to spectre, from spectre to plant, from plant to galaxy."
